Ure Pear
Ure Pear is an ultra-cold-hardy, early-mid season Ussurian cultivar valued for its juicy, versatile fruit and year-round ornamental appeal.
- Taste: very juicy with a mild sweetness and subtle earthy undertones; texture is firm yet tender when fully ripe
- Skin & Flesh Color: pale green-yellow skin that may blush softly in sun; crisp, snow-white flesh that stays succulent when cooked
- Harvest Season: mid to late August, often a week before Golden Spice
- Disease Resistance: excellent resistance to fire blight and cold damage; tolerant of scab and chlorosis; monitor for pear psylla and caterpillars
- Best Uses: fresh eating for those who love extra-juicy pears, canning, sauces, chutneys, and light baking
- Pollination: partially self-fertile but sets heaviest crops when paired with Golden Spice, or another Ussuri-type pear in bloom simultaneously
- Chill Hours & Hardiness: thrives with 800–1,200 chill hours; reliably hardy to USDA Zone 3 (down to –40 °F)
- Origin & Heritage: selected in 1978 at Canada’s Morden Research Station from Ussurian parentage; named for breeder R.L. Ure and prized in northern orchards since release
