Spencer Apple
Cold-hardy, crisp, and full of flavor.
Spencer is a Canadian-bred gem developed at the Summerland Experimental Farm—a cross between McIntosh and Golden Delicious, selected in 1938 and released in 1959. Named for pomologist Spencer Dyson, this variety blends northern resilience with orchard elegance.
The tree is vigorous, upright, and exceptionally winter hardy, with some resistance to cedar-apple rust. Though slow to start, it settles into reliable annual production once mature.
Spencer apples are large and oblong, with a light red blush over green skin. The white flesh is crisp, juicy, and richly flavored—excellent for fresh eating and baking alike. With good storage life through winter, Spencer is a dependable choice for northern growers seeking both beauty and utility.
