Long John Plum
A bigger, better prune—with flavor to match.
Long John (also known as Longjohn) is a standout blue plum developed at Cornell, named in honor of legendary plum breeder John P. Watson. This vigorous, upright tree has a graceful, willowy growth habit and sets fruit early and abundantly. It’s partially self-fruitful, but for best yields, pair it with another European plum like Mount Royal, Stanley, Castleton, or Victory for the most fruit.
Long John produces large, teardrop-shaped plums with dark purple-blue skin and a waxy bloom. Inside, the amber flesh is smooth, freestone, and firm—ideal for fresh eating, shipping, or drying. Its flavor is rich and complex, with Iroquois parentage lending exceptional quality. In taste tests, it’s a consistent favorite.
While sensitive to mites and canker, Long John shows resistance to bacterial spot and thrives with attentive care. If you’re looking for a high-quality prune-style plum with beauty, flavor, and pedigree, Long John delivers.
