Spartan Apple
Crisp, aromatic, and cold-climate ready.
Spartan is a Canadian classic introduced in 1936 by R.C. Palmer in Summerland, British Columbia. Though its exact parentage remains a mystery, it’s likely a cross between Albermarle Pippin and McIntosh—bringing together bold flavor and reliable performance.
This medium-sized apple is cloaked in a rich maroon-red blush with hints of green and gold. Inside, the pure white flesh is crisp, juicy, and highly aromatic, with a mellow flavor that’s more subtle than sharp. It’s excellent for fresh eating, baking, and long-term storage.
The tree itself is neat, attractive, and exceptionally cold hardy. It crops heavily and reliably, with pollen that moves even in cooler temperatures—making it a dependable choice for northern orchards. Naturally resistant to scab, fireblight, and cedar apple rust, Spartan is as easy to grow as it is to enjoy.
