Northland Crabapple

Cold-hardy, compact, and bursting with flavor.

Northland (also known as MN 1423) is a Minnesota-bred hybrid crabapple that combines rugged northern hardiness with bright, flavorful fruit. Developed by the University of Minnesota Fruit Breeding Program and released in 1957, this cross of McIntosh and Dolgo is a reliable performer in zone 3 and beyond.

The tree is productive, and well-suited to both home orchards and wildlife plantings. While slightly susceptible to fireblight and scab, and prone to biennial bearing, Northland’s consistent vigor and heavy fruit set make it a favorite among northern growers.

Its fruit is small—about 1.5 inches across—and vivid red, with a shape and color reminiscent of its Dolgo parent. The flesh is dark yellow tinged with red, crisp, tender, and mildly subacid. It’s excellent for fresh eating and shines in jelly, sauce, and pickles. The fruit hangs well into fall, offering extended harvest and visual appeal.

Whether you’re planting for flavor, resilience, or wildlife support, Northland delivers a beautiful balance of utility and charm.
